Update – 10/14/21

Following asphalt paving work, the majority of permanent pavement markings have been installed on Fremont Center Road and IL RT 60. A nationwide material shortage has left a small area yet to be completed on Fremont Center Road. This will be finished when material becomes available. Landscaping is expected to be complete later this week, with seed and blanket along the north side of RT 60 and trees planted throughout the project limits. Other minor punch list items will also be completed. The only work which will not be completed this year are the permanent traffic signals. They are expected to be installed in early 2022.

Update – 9/28/21

Last week, longitudinal joint sealant was installed on Fremont Center Road and IL RT 60 in advance of HMA surface paving. Prime coat was then applied and paving soon followed. After paving was completed, seed and blanket was installed along the north side of IL RT 60. Electrical work also continued last week. Contractors excavated and poured concrete for handholes and foundations which will support the permanent traffic signals. This week, aggregate shoulder was installed along the east side of Fremont Center Road to match the new height of the finished pavement. Next, permanent pavement markings and reflective pavement markers were installed along IL RT 60. Later this week, electrical underground work is expected to continue in addition to pavement markings on Fremont Center Road. Signs are also expected to be installed along IL RT 60 and Fremont Center Road. Please continue to check the project website for updates.

Update – 9/16/21

This week, the existing asphalt surface on Fremont Center Road and IL RT 60 was milled. Once this was completed, the pavement was then cleaned and primed. The prime coat is intended to provide adhesion between the existing pavement and the subsequent asphalt lifts. Fremont Center Road and IL RT 60 were then paved with a thin lift of leveling binder. This lift helps to eliminate any irregularities in the pavement and provides a smooth riding surface prior to the final lift of asphalt. Later this week, drainage structures located within the pavement will be adjusted to their final elevations. Concrete electrical handholes and foundations will also be poured. Next week, longitudinal joint sealant will be installed and the final asphalt surface lift will be paved. Landscaping along the north side of RT 60 is also expected to take place. Please continue to check the project website for updates.

Update – 9/8/21

Last week, work continued along the north side of RT 60. Installation of geotechnical fabric, pipe underdrain, and aggregate subgrade was completed and the subgrade was fine graded to the proposed elevation. The ditch along the north side of the road was also excavated. This week, asphalt paving began along the north side of RT 60. Due to limited access within the work zone, a material transfer device was used to efficiently deliver asphalt from the trucks to the paver. After paving, the temporary barrier wall along the north side of RT 60 will be removed. Next week, milling of the existing pavement surface on RT 60 and Fremont Center Road will begin. Paving of the new asphalt surface is expected to take place during the week of 9/20. Please continue to check the project website for updates.

Update – 8/27/21

Last week, Fremont Center Road was opened to traffic and the detour was removed. Seed and blanket was completed along Fremont Center Road and along the south side of RT 60. Wetland plugs were planted in the detention basin at the southwest corner of the intersection. Work also began along the north side of RT 60. The temporary pavement from the previous traffic stage was removed and the contractor began grading the clay subgrade. This week, the contractor began placing geotechnical fabric, pipe underdrain, and aggregate subgrade along the north side of RT 60. Grading of the ditch alongside the pavement also took place. Storm sewer work north of RT 60 was also completed this week. The culvert crossing under RT 60 was extended further north to accommodate the widened pavement. Culverts were also installed in the ditch line along the north side of the roadway. Next week, earthwork on the north side of RT 60 will continue with asphalt paving expected to take place week of 9/6. Please continue to check the project website for updates.

Update – 8/16/21

Last week, driveways within the project limits were paved with hot-mix asphalt. Aggregate shoulders were also installed along the east side of Fremont Center Road. Guardrail installation was completed along the south side of IL RT 60, west of Fremont Center Road. Holes were cored in the asphalt shoulder so that the posts could be driven to the appropriate depth. Temporary striping for the second stage of construction was installed on Fremont Center Road and IL RT 60. Traffic was shifted south onto to the new pavement along IL RT 60 and the concrete barrier was relocated north. This will allow work to take place along the north side of IL RT 60. This week, landscaping will take place along Fremont Center Road and IL RT 60 and pavement removal will begin along the north side of IL RT 60. On Tuesday, 8/17/21, the temporary traffic signal at Fremont Center Road and IL RT 60 will be turned on and Fremont Center Road will be opened to traffic. Please continue to check the project website for updates.

Update – 8/7/2021

This week, asphalt paving began on Fremont Center Road and along the south side of IL RT 60. In order to ensure proper compaction and thickness, the asphalt is paved in three separate lifts. The fourth and final asphalt lift will not be paved until the second stage of construction is complete. At that time, the existing pavement on Fremont Center Road and IL RT 60 will be milled and overlaid with asphalt surface to the full width of the new roadway. Longitudinal joints are typically the location where the pavement is most likely to fail. This is because of the higher air void percentage in relation to the rest of the mat. To combat this, Longitudinal Joint Sealant (LJS) is used. This material is applied directly beneath the longitudinal joint of the next asphalt lift. Once it is paved over, it rises and fills the voids and, in turn, extends the life of the pavement. Next week, asphalt paving for this first stage of construction will be completed. Landscaping and guardrail installation along IL RT 60 is also expected to take place. Please continue to check the project website for updates.

Update – 7/30/2021

Last week, work began on the temporary traffic signals at Fremont Center Road and IL RT 60. The signals are expected to be turned on the week of 8/16. This week, concrete curb and gutter was poured along IL RT 60 and Fremont Center Road. A slipform curb machine was used which allows the curb to be poured without forms and can be completed much faster. Once curb and gutter work was completed, crews began fine grading the aggregate subgrade under the roadway. Next week, hot-mix asphalt paving is expected to begin. Please continue to check the project website for updates.
